Caring For Gemstone and Fossil Jewelry

Natural gemstones are porous.  You should not expose them to harsh chemicals such as bleach, jewelry cleaner, turpentine—well, anything with a strong odor.  We wear some of our own gemstone jewelry regularly, and those pieces have been exposed to bath soap, shampoo, conditioner, dish soap, and laundry detergent (not bleach) without any ill effects.  They have even been accidentally dunked in the pool a few times and are fine, but we do not recommend wearing gemstones in chlorinated pools.

Should your gemstone jewelry need cleaning, use warm water and a bit of mild soap (if necessary).  Dry with a chamois or soft cotton cloth (like an old t-shirt).  You can rub them with a chamois or cotton cloth anytime to keep them shiny and lustrous.  NEVER CLEAN GEMSTONES OR FOSSILS IN JEWELRY CLEANER.

Fossils, by nature, are pretty tough.  Still, you should not expose them to harsh chemicals such as jewelry cleaner or bleach.  Like gemstones, fossils should be fine with shampoo and bath soap.  Clean them with warm water and a bit of mild soap (if necessary).  Dry them with a chamois or soft cotton cloth.  When cleaning ammonites, be mindful of the chambers and channels.

If your silver tarnishes, use a silver-cleaning cloth to easily remove the tarnish and polish the silver.  Be sure to use the silver-cleaning cloth on only the silver; do not use it on the gemstones or fossils.

To keep your jewelry in excellent condition, limit its exposure to colognes, hair gels, and the like.  If you use these products, wait about ten minutes after applying them before putting on your jewelry.  Store your jewelry in a dry, soft box or in a zip-lock bag.
